Whether you’re moving across the street or across the country, planning your move ahead of time can make for a smooth and stress-free experience. People often say that moving is one of the most stressful life events you’ll deal with. We’re here to help you debunk that theory with our Timeline For a Smooth Move.
90 Days From Your Move
Three months or 90 days, it’s not a lot of time for the moving process. One of the most time-consuming undertakings you’ll have when moving is packing – especially if you have kids or just a lot of stuff.
The more you have to sort through, the more time you should give yourself to pack for your move. Here are six packing hacks you can use to help create your plan of attack.
If the thought of packing yourself has you panicking, consider hiring a full-service moving company like Freedom Moving in Pasadena, Maryland. We will come to do an in-home inventory to give you a free, no-obligation estimate on packing services.
Now would be a good time to also:
- Get valuables appraised and insured
- Create a budget
- Pick a day to move
- Create a home inventory
- Designate a moving folder for all moving-related documents
- Let your kids’ schools know you’re moving to start the transfer
- Measure your furniture to see if it will fit in your new home
60 Days From Your Move
At this point, you should have a good idea of whether you are going to move yourself. If not, it’s time to start looking for a moving company to get on their calendar for your moving day. As a full-service moving company, Freedom Moving can help with getting you from point A to point B. We can be involved with as little or as much of your move as you want us to be.
You should also be working through all your belongings. Taking things to the landfill, decluttering, donating, and deciding how many packing supplies you need. If you plan to have a yard sale, you should also determine what weekend you’ll hold it so you can prepare for that as well.
If you have to put things in storage, now is the time to get quotes for units. You can also start packing items you won’t be using until you’re in your new place. Collect and label your moving boxes and make a designated kit with things you’ll need your first week while getting settled. If you have young kids, consider creating an activity box for them to keep them occupied on moving day.
30 Days From Move
Moving month is here! Time to notify agencies and companies you do business with of your impending move. If you are moving long-distance and plan to fly, you should book your tickets and coordinate the rest of the trip.
If you need pet or childcare during the move, have this scheduled as soon as possible. As you get done packing rooms, deep clean each space of your current home. You may also need to:
- Service your vehicles
- Return library books
- Transfer prescriptions, bank accounts, doctors, etc.
- Empty and defrost your freezer
- Drain the gas from lawn equipment
On moving day, be prepared to guide the movers if you hire them. Do a last sweep of the house to make sure you left nothing behind. Dispose of trash, secure the home, and check the thermostat before you leave for the last time.
Congratulations, you’ve made it through moving day! Now it’s time to unpack and start your new journey.
